A Time Complexity Gap for Two-Way Probabilistic Finite-State Automata
نویسندگان
چکیده
It is shown that if a 2-way probabilistic nite state automaton (2pfa) M recognizes a nonregular language L with error probability bounded below 1/2, then there is a positive constant b (depending on M) such that, for innnitely many inputs x, the expected running time of M on input x must exceed 2 n b where n is the length of x. This complements a result of Freivalds showing that 2pfa's can recognize certain nonregular languages in exponential expected time. It also establishes a time complexity gap for 2pfa's, since any regular language can be recognized by some 2pfa in linear time. Other results give roughly exponential upper and lower bounds on the worst-case increase in the number of states when converting a polynomial-time 2pfa to an equivalent 2-way nondeterministic nite-state automaton or to an equivalent 1-way deterministic nite-state automaton.

Reduction of Computational Complexity in Finite State Automata Explosion of Networked System Diagnosis (RESEARCH NOTE)
This research puts forward rough finite state automata which have been represented by two variants of BDD called ROBDD and ZBDD. The proposed structures have been used in networked system diagnosis and can overcome cominatorial explosion. In implementation the CUDD - Colorado University Decision Diagrams package is used. A mathematical proof for claimed complexity are provided which shows ZBDD ...
متن کاملCommunication complexity of promise problems and their applications to finite automata
Equality and disjointness are two of the most studied problems in communication complexity. They have been studied for both classical and also quantum communication and for various models and modes of communication. Buhrman et al. [6] proved that the exact quantum communication complexity for a promise version of the equality problem is O(logn) while the classical deterministic communication co...
متن کاملClassical Automata on Promise Problems
Promise problems were mainly studied in quantum automata theory. Here we focus on state complexity of classical automata for promise problems. First, it was known that there is a family of unary promise problems solvable by quantum automata by using a single qubit, but the number of states required by corresponding one-way deterministic automata cannot be bounded by a constant. For this family,...
متن کاملState Complexity Advantages of Ultrametric Automata
Ultrametric automata have properties similar to the properties of probabilistic automata but the descriptional power of these types of automata can differ very much. In this paper, we compare ultrametric automata with deterministic, nondeterministic, probabilistic and alternating automata with various state complexities. We also show that two-way ultrametric automata can have a smaller state co...
متن کاملTwo-way finite automata with quantum and classical states
We introduce 2-way finite automata with quantum and classical states (2qcfa’s). This is a variant on the 2-way quantum finite automata (2qfa) model which may be simpler to implement than unrestricted 2qfa’s; the internal state of a 2qcfa may include a quantum part that may be in a (mixed) quantum state, but the tape head position is required to be classical. We show two languages for which 2qcf...
